The central part of the oilfield is covered with mud volcanoes, and there are surface shows of gas and oil in the volcanoes. The Exploration Well 2 which discovered the Kurovdagh field produced 31 tons of oil from the Pay Zone 1 horizon on June 18, 1955. Afterwards, a large number of wells were drilled in the central part of the field.
Later on, an abundance of oil was found in the north-west and south-east parts of the field. Cumulative oil production as of January 1, 2011 from the Kurovdagh field was 39.3 million tons.
